Hassell has delivered the design for Rouse Hill station, completing seven of eight station designs for Sydney Metro.

The Rouse Hill station is one of two elevated Sydney Metro Northwest stations and will be positioned about 12 metres above the ground as part of the 4-kilometre sky train.

The Sydney Metro Northwest project covers 23 kilometres of new track and rail systems, eight railway stations, 4000 commuter car parking spaces and the conversion of 13 kilometres of railway to metro status. Being executed under a $3.7 billion public–private partnership, the project has been contracted to Northwest Rapid Transit with Hassell commissioned to design all of the Sydney Metro Northwest stations.

Designs for Cherrybrook, Castle Hill, Showground, Norwest, Bella Vista and Cudgegong Road stations have already been released, with the design for the second elevated station, Kellyville remaining to be delivered by Hassell.

The customer-focussed station designs incorporate elements such as lifts and escalators for easy access as well as weather protection and maximum natural light. Platform screen doors at each station will ensure greater safety for travellers and also allow trains to travel at faster speeds.

The canopy design spanning the entrance is inspired by a blue gum leaf and will be a common feature across all Sydney Metro Northwest stations. Similarly, a common palette of materials including metal roofs, local timer and white concrete foundations will be used at all the stations. Features such as natural ventilation and daylight to brighten the station interiors will minimise energy consumption while digital wayfinding, video help points and real-time journey updates will be provided for the convenience of travellers.

An urban design and corridor landscape plan using native and flowering trees is also being designed for each station to help integrate the new station into its local area. Each station will also offer bus interchanges, bicycle storage, taxi spaces and drop-off and pick-up areas.

NSW minister for transport and infrastructure, Andrew Constance expects the Rouse Hill station to become a new hub for commuters.

Sydney Metro Northwest is due to open in the first half of 2019 while the next stage of the project, which extends the Sydney Metro under Sydney Harbour and the CBD and on to Bankstown, is expected to open in 2024.

Hassell’s previous station designs include the Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, which won the 2010 Sulman Medal and 2011 Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture at the 2010 National Architecture Awards.
