The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) in Wollongong is hosting a Symposium called Inspiring, Sustainable, Living Buildings on Friday 24th October 2014.

The one-day symposium at the University of Wollongong centre will bring together leading designers, practitioners and policy makers to showcase some of Australia's most inspiring and sustainable building projects.

A wide range of experts from the Australian Sustainable Buildings sector will present and discuss the current trends and future developments in the field of sustainable buildings.

Presenters will include Anthony Nolan (Chair, National Sustainability Committee, Australian Institute of Architects) speaking about ‘Making the Exceptional the Norm’.

SBRC director Professor Paul Cooper will speak about the renowned Illawarra Flame Solar Decathlon House and the UOW 'Sustainability Street'.

The SBRC was designed by Cox Architecture to be both a research hub, as well as a research subject.

Cox Architecture’s project architect on the SBRC building, Michael Bradburn will be talking about the creation of the building, which is seeking a 6 Green Star (Education) Design Rating and Living Building Challenge certification, currently the world’s most stringent building certification scheme.

The President of Living Future Institute Australia, Mary Casey, will also be in attendance, to speak about The Living Building Challenge, on both Local and International Perspectives.

Symposium participants will have the opportunity to visit and learn details of both the SBRC and the Illawarra Flame House as part of the symposium.

Themes for the day include:

Inspirational sustainable buildings
Sustainability retrofits and refurbishment of residential and commercial buildings
Sustainability rating tools and their influence on design and delivery
Evaluation of building performance
Living Laboratories and demonstration of best practice to professionals and the general community

Open Day

The following day, the SBRC will also hold its first public open day.

The free event takes place Saturday 25th October 2014 from 9:00am to 1:00pm and will include building tours of the SBRC and Illawarra Flame house, expert speakers, featured research projects and products, along with entertainment and refreshments. More information and register to attend here.
