Following the installation of 13 sculptural timber elements at The Cutaway as part of the transformative multi-million-dollar fitout led by the NSW Government, Sydney will soon open the doors to a world-class cultural and event venue in Barangaroo.

The latest milestone marks the completion of 85% of the project and offers a first look at the redesigned and renovated venue, which is part of the Minns Labor Government’s continuing efforts to strengthen Sydney’s reputation as a world-class events and tourism destination. This mega-fitout will transform The Cutaway into a premier venue hosting events, exhibitions, festivals and installations drawing locals and tourists alike.

At the heart of the redesigned venue are 13 sculptural timber ‘trees’, each standing 16 metres tall and made from up to 150 precision-crafted timber pieces. While serving as a visually striking centrepiece of the design, these timber structures also enhance the acoustics of the space through perforated plywood and insulation.

The venue’s redesign, led by FJC Studio, is guided by principles of Connecting with Country, and draws on deep collaboration with First Nations designers Shannon Foster and Jake Nash to create a space that is both welcoming and culturally resonant.

On completion in early 2026, The Cutaway will feature two versatile event levels with flexible spaces; a grand main hall showcasing the original sandstone wall; improved natural light and acoustic performance; and kitchen, green room and back-of-house facilities to support premium events.

According to Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper, the redesigned Cutaway is set to become the beating heart of Barangaroo, drawing crowds from far and wide and providing a major boost to the local precinct and businesses.

“Delivering this new unique venue will ensure Barangaroo is a must-visit destination. Once completed, it will be another iconic institution set on Sydney’s harbour, hosting a diverse range of events that will really assist in unlocking the potential of the precinct.”
