The Hub on Echlin and the Laneway House were the two big winners at the 2016 North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards announced recently in Townsville. The jury also awarded Regional Commendations to the two projects.

Designed by Architects North, The Hub on Echlin won the night’s top honour, the Walter and Oliver Tunbridge Award for Building of the Year as well as the Regional Project of the Year award and a Regional Commendation.

The jury noted:

“This exemplary contemporary building sits comfortably within one of Townsville’s oldest suburbs. Constructed as a kit-of-parts that talks inspiringly to its quirky West End community.”

The Laneway House designed by 9point9 Architects won the House of the Year award along with a Regional Commendation.

The jury described the project as:

“An idyllic response to a narrow lot with a west-facing street and rear laneway. Two wings connected by a translucent walkway that frames a courtyard. An intelligent material palette delivers nicely detailed raw finishes throughout light-filled living spaces flowing onto flexible, covered outdoor spaces and a central courtyard.”

Four Regional Commendations were also given to projects selected from 11 entries, with the commended projects now progressing to the Queensland State Architecture Awards to be announced on 24 June in Brisbane.
