This year’s shortlist for Adaptive Reuse – Alteration/Addition features an inspiring lineup of projects:

• Younghusband Woolstore Redevelopment by Woods Bagot

The Younghusband Woolstore Redevelopment is one of Australias most ambitious adaptive reuse projects.jpg — Woods Bagot has converted over 17,000 square metres of underutilised industrial landscape into a vibrant, mixed-use community precinct.

• Lumberyard by CADRE

The Lumber Yard has been in Bangalow’s history for a century.jpg — The vision wasn’t to redevelop the site, it was more to bring it back but with a difference while honouring its history.

• Reddam House North Shore by AJC

Reddam House North Shore is the adaptive reuse of the iconic 1971 Simsmetal House, originally designed by Harry Seidler. AJC Architects led the transformation of the commercial office tower into a contemporary K–12 school, preserving key heritage elements while introducing state-of-the-art educational environments.

• Buildonix Adaptive Component Home — 103 Linden Avenue

Buildonix is a revolutionary Australian-designed, component-based building system. The brief was to create a new dwelling that would blend seamlessly into the property and not visually dominate the existing home or garden.

• Reclaimed Broken Common Bricks by University of Technology Sydney

Reclaimed Broken Common Bricks is an adaptive reuse project located in Woollahra that transforms construction waste into architectural value.jpg — Set within a heritage precinct, the design sensitively preserves elements of the existing structure while introducing a new public-spirited purpose: a shared gallery and residence for emerging artists.

• The Stopover by Taylor Buchtmann Architecture

The Stopover is part of long term generational investment, stabilising existing building stock and creating a legacy.jpeg — Material reused from the surrounding farm includes timber panelling, brass handrails, galv pipe balustrade, stone to rebuild walls.

• Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct by Archer Office

Boot Factory and Mill Hill Centre Precinct is an exemplar of adaptive reuse.jpg — The project breathes new life into two Council-owned buildings constructed a century apart, alongside the revitalisation of Norman Lee Place to form a new public square in Bondi Junction.

These projects exemplify excellence in Adaptive Reuse – Alteration/Addition, recognising the adaptive reuse of a building (heritage and/or new) that has minimal impact on the historical significance of the building and its setting, while also pursuing a design that is sympathetic to the building in order to give it a new purpose.

Now in its 19th year, the Sustainability Awards is Australia’s longest-running and most prestigious program celebrating excellence in sustainable design and architecture. On 19 November 2025, winners across 18 categories will be announced at the five-star Gala Evening at Sydney Town Hall.

The same day, the Sustainability Summit at The Fullerton Hotel, Sydney, and streamed online, offers a day-long CPD program led by industry experts to educate and inspire the Australian architecture and design community.
