Australia’s largest cultural infrastructure project since the Sydney Opera House is set to open in late 2026, with Powerhouse Parramatta poised to become a landmark museum and global cultural destination for Western Sydney.

Located on the banks of the Parramatta River, the 30,000sqm future-focused museum is designed by Franco-Japanese design practice Moreau Kusunoki alongside Australian architecture firm Genton. Funded by the NSW Government and delivered by Infrastructure NSW, the project marks the first state cultural institution to be built in Western Sydney, one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most culturally diverse regions.

Construction of the museum began more than four years ago, with the main building now completed by delivery partner Lendlease. Exhibition fitouts and final public domain works are continuing ahead of the opening.

The museum is preparing to launch with five major international exhibitions, alongside a broad program of learning, industry and community activities.

Among the key attractions at the Powerhouse Parramatta will be one of Australia’s largest column-free exhibition halls, spanning more than 2,000sqm with an 18m ceiling height. The space will host ‘Task Eternal’, an immersive exhibition examining humanity’s pursuit of space exploration.

Powerhouse Parramatta will also significantly expand public access to the Powerhouse Collection, which includes more than 500,000 objects. The museum’s full opening exhibition program is expected to be announced later this year.

Education and research are central to the institution’s vision. The Lang Walker Family Academy will provide immersive learning experiences, including overnight residency programs for up to 10,000 secondary students annually from regional New South Wales and Western Sydney.

The museum will also house 30 residential studios for scientists, researchers and artists collaborating on research and programs. Additional features include the 200-seat Vitocco Kitchen, focused on the science, technology and culture of food, and a rooftop terrace featuring Indigenous gardens, a greenhouse, telescopes beneath a retractable roof observatory and the ING Pavilion for talks and workshops.

Sustainability is embedded into the project with Powerhouse Parramatta set to open with net-zero emissions from day one. The museum is the first public building in Australia as well as the first project in Western Sydney to achieve a 6 Star Designed rating under GBCA’s Green Star Buildings assessment tool. The project incorporates water harvesting, renewable energy systems, zero-waste exhibition practices and Caring for Country principles developed in collaboration with the First Nations communities of Sydney.

“The completion of Powerhouse Parramatta is a landmark moment for Western Sydney and a transformative investment in NSW's future,” says Powerhouse Trust President David Borger. “Its construction completion signals not only the delivery of a world-class cultural institution but a major driver of jobs, opportunity and cultural participation for one of the fastest-growing regions in the country.”

Describing Powerhouse Parramatta as a new generation museum, Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havilah comments, “Through its infrastructure and programs, Powerhouse will create a dynamic ecology that will bring together industry and community, present collections, histories, and ideas in new ways. It will be a museum embedded with innate flexibility, with the ability to continuously evolve, changing with the world to ensure that it remains relevant and impactful for generations to come.”
