The City of Newcastle recently celebrated the official reopening of the landmark Newcastle Art Gallery after extensive redevelopment, with a major exhibition showcasing almost 500 works from their collection alongside new commissions.

The relaunch marks a new chapter for one of Australia’s most significant regional cultural institutions – the redeveloped Gallery now stands as the largest public art institution in New South Wales outside Sydney.

Originally established through a bequest in 1945, the Newcastle Art Gallery building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in March 1977. Today, the Gallery houses more than 7,000 artworks valued at approximately $145 million, making it one of the country’s most significant public art collections.

Award-winning architects Clare Design worked in collaboration with Smith and Tzannes Architects and engineering consultancy Arup to design the extension. Building on the original brutalist architecture, the expansion more than doubles the Gallery’s footprint, adding 1,600sqm of exhibition space. New facilities include an international-standard loading dock, cafe, retail shop, multipurpose program space and learning studio, significantly expanding the Gallery’s capacity to host exhibitions and community programs.

In addition to organising a three-day public program, which included live music, street events and performances, the Gallery also announced the 2026 exhibition calendar featuring solo exhibitions by leading contemporary artists Brian Robinson, Angela Tiatia and Anh Do, as well as The Mordant Family Gift, with major works recently gifted from the private collection of the leading philanthropists.

The redevelopment reflects the city’s long-term commitment to cultural investment, says City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath.

“Newcastle Art Gallery has stood as a cultural beacon since its establishment in 1957 and the official opening of its current building in 1977. However, the Gallery’s ambition and nationally significant collection long ago outgrew the original building.”

He notes that the decision to expand followed a 16-year planning process that culminated in a pivotal council vote in July 2021, paving the way for what has become the City of Newcastle’s largest capital works project.

“The expansion is tangible evidence of our bold commitment to culture and creativity, which ensures Newcastle Art Gallery will take its place as one of Australia's leading cultural institutions,” he adds.

Anchoring the official reopening of the expanded Gallery is the inaugural exhibition titled Iconic, Loved, Unexpected, which brings together national icons, well-known favourites and rarely seen works. Comprising almost 500 artworks, the show includes artists with strong ties to Newcastle such as Joseph Lycett, William Dobell, Margaret Olley, John Olsen, Nell and Lottie Consalvo; leading First Nations artists including Emily Kam Kngwarray, Sally Gabori, Tracey Moffatt, Archie Moore and Albert Namatjira; and international figures from French sculptor Auguste Rodin to avant-garde Japanese ceramicist Kazuo Yagi, highlighting the breadth of the Gallery’s collection from the early nineteenth century to the present day.

Among major new commissions are a four-metre-high sculpture by seventh generation Novocastrian and proud Awabakal descendant Shellie Smith in collaboration with sculptor Julie Squires; architectural-scale sculptures by Fayen d'Evie, which improve accessibility of the floating staircases from the original building for visually-impaired visitors through tactile versions of works of art; a new work by Wiradjuri and Wongaibon artist Renae Lamb inspired by strong women and connecting stories; and a Sonic Acknowledgement of Country by composer Adam Manning, featuring soundscapes from Awabakal and Worimi Country.

The annual exhibition program features Brian Robinson: Multiverse, the first major solo exhibition in NSW by the multi-skilled artist (23 May – 30 August 2026); The Mordant Family Gift: Newcastle Art Gallery Collection featuring 25 works by Australian and international artists (23 May – 8 November 2026); Muse, the first major Australian survey of globally recognised and Newcastle-based artist Angela Tiatia (26 September 2026 – 21 February 2027); a world-first inaugural solo exhibition by national icon and painter Anh Do (28 November 2026 – 28 March 2027); and a kinetic installation from A.A.Murakami (26 September 2026 – 31 January 2027) among many more.

“This reopening marks a defining moment for Newcastle Art Gallery and for the cultural life of our city,” observes Newcastle Art Gallery Director Lauretta Morton. “With a reimagined building, an expanded collection on display, and an ambitious program for 2026, the Gallery enters a new chapter as a place of connection, curiosity and shared experience.”
