Brookfield Multiplex has received the Australian Construction Achievement Award for the $450 million Melbourne Convention Centre.

Brookfield Multiplex built the world’s first 6 star Green Star Convention Centre as part of the $1.4 billion South Wharf Development.

The 70,000 sqme Convention Centre was developed in a public private partnership (PPP) with the Victorian Government, Plenary Group and Deutsche Bank, with a design team comprising NH Architects, Woods Bagot and Larry Oltmanns.

Brookfield Multiplex was responsible for the design, construction and on-going facilities management of the project.

The Melbourne Convention Centre features a water treatment plant to recycle wastewater and the joint application of chilled slab and displacement ventilation technologies to enhance building performance.

Initiatives such as glass coating to reduce heat ingression, chilled beams and displacement ventilation, radiant in-floor heating and cooling, high fresh air rates for indoor air quality and CO2 monitoring also contribute to the 6 star Green Star rating.

It has been designed to maximise natural light and lessen the need for climate control and was constructed using sustainable building materials, including low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints and adhesives, FSC-certified timber and minimal use of PVC.
