Technological wizardry from Intel Australia will bring this year’s Vivid Sydney to life as it powers several creative and beautiful installations across the city.

Intel Australia and New Zealand Managing Director, Kate Burleigh said the company was proud to return for the fourth consecutive year as Vivid Partner in 2014, with Intel technology embedded throughout the festival.

Burleigh explains Intel is truly inside Vivid in 2014, spanning the festival’s footprint, and powering many of the popular installations from digitally ‘painting’ the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge using a custom built Intel powered tablet to helping control the beautiful Harbour Lights installation using Intel’s tiniest processors.

The harbour installation will have vessels large and small, decorated with brilliant LED lights and changing colour as they float into different parts of the harbour. A collaboration between Intel and Sydney-based 32 Hundred Lighting, ‘Harbour Lights’ is made possible with the latest in Intel technology with the changing colours of the boats controlled by pre-programmed, Intel-powered satellite navigation GPS kits, based on the Intel Galileo development board, a tiny circuit board that makes it easier for artists, designers, and DIY enthusiasts to create interactive environments.

On May 31, the public will also have the opportunity to get hands on with the very same technology that makes ‘Harbour Lights’ possible when Intel hosts its Galileo development board workshops as part of Vivid Ideas.

A larger-than-life interactive Intel robot will also be roaming the Vivid Sydney precincts throughout the festival. Festival goers will be able to control its colours and movements via an Intel powered Acer A1-830 tablet. Intel will be giving away tablets during the festival to the best Intel robot photos uploaded to Instagram with the hashtag #Intelrobot.

Intel will also join the Vivid Sydney 2014 expansion into the CBD Martin Place precinct with more details to be revealed soon. Among the lights of Martin Place a ‘Digital Forest’ will spring forth, and behind the 120 LED 3D interactive glowing tubes of the forest, a display of the latest Intel tablet and 2 in 1 products will offer festival goers a place to take a break, play some games, and trial a range of products.

Following on from the success of last year, Intel Australia and Sydney-based lightwork innovators 32 Hundred Lighting, once again team up to give visitors the chance to ‘paint’ the western face of the Sydney Harbour Bridge using an Intel powered touch screen, located on the Luna Park boardwalk.

Vivid Sydney is owned and managed by Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, and is one of five signature events in the NSW Events Calendar.

Named Australia’s Event of the Year in 2013, the 18-day annual light, music and ideas festival attracts artists and creative thinkers from around the world. Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase commented that Intel has been an important partner in Vivid Sydney’s success over the last four years and thanked the Intel team for their help in developing another fantastic event.
