The public facilities at Pyrmont Bridge in one of Sydney’s busiest waterfront precincts have been completely refurbished, with the designers focusing on adaptive reuse, accessibility, comfort and long-term durability.

Designed by HDR and delivered in partnership with Placemaking NSW, the Pyrmont Bridge East Amenities Refurbishment project revitalises the existing public amenities within the Darling Harbour precinct through considered architectural renewal. Although modest in scale at around 80 square metres, the project aims to improve essential public infrastructure through careful material selection, clearer spatial organisation and a stronger connection to the surrounding heritage context.

Adaptive reuse

Instead of demolishing and constructing new facilities, the design team has retained the existing structure and services layout, reducing embodied carbon, construction waste and disruption to a heavily used public area.

“This low-impact approach extends the life of a modest public asset and demonstrates how thoughtful renewal can deliver durable infrastructure that continues to serve the community for decades,” says HDR’s Associate Principal and Interior Design Lead, Max Navius.

Referencing local heritage

The interior design is shaped by the site’s heritage sensitivities, with the restrained material palette drawing inspiration from the robustness and industrial character of the adjacent Pyrmont Bridge and surrounding harbour infrastructure. A terracotta-based palette balanced against the existing sandstone facade and subtle tonal variations, reflects the bridge’s natural patina.

“These elements establish a clear dialogue between old and new, reinforcing a strong sense of place rooted in Pyrmont’s industrial character,” explains Navius.

Improving clarity and safety

Spatial clarity was a key driver of the refurbishment project. The removal of the redundant monorail structure has helped open circulation paths, while new lighting, security screening and intuitive wayfinding measures have been introduced to improve user experience and safety.

These changes are intended to support a wide range of visitors from families during the day to large event crowds and night-time users, making the compact facility easier to navigate and more comfortable to use.

Focus on inclusivity

Accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of the redesign, with contemporary accessible amenities, multiple baby-change facilities and a dedicated child/carer cubicle included to accommodate diverse users.

“By elevating the quality of an everyday public amenity, the refurbishment demonstrates how small, considered interventions can deliver meaningful social value,” notes Navius.

Practical sustainability measures

Sustainability strategies at the Pyrmont Bridge amenities refurbishment focus on durability and operational efficiency: Robust finishes have been selected to withstand heavy usage, reducing maintenance and replacement cycles; low-VOC materials support healthier indoor environments; and water-efficient fixtures, energy-saving lighting and natural ventilation help minimise ongoing environmental impact while reducing operational demand and enhancing user comfort.

High impact outcomes

Though relatively compact, the refurbishment illustrates how targeted upgrades can improve user experience while respecting heritage context and limiting environmental impact. The approach also demonstrates how adaptive reuse can successfully deliver resilient public infrastructure without large-scale redevelopment in a precinct that draws millions of visitors every year.
