A mixture of adaptive reuse and heritage-focussed new construction will see HASSELL architects transform Sydney’s Flour Mills at Summer Hill into a new master-planned residential precinct.

Situated in Sydney’s inner-west, the brownfield site will be eventually redeveloped over two stages into 300 apartments, landscaped gardens and commercial spaces. Stage 1 will include 127 apartments and is scheduled to commence construction early 2015.

The HASSELL design takes cues from the industrial proportions of the site and the Mill’s old grain silos are still recognisable as converted apartments on the masterplan.

The overall precinct will incorporate a mix of cafes, studios and small retail spaces within some of the industrial fabric of the old buildings.

HASSELL says the precinct will increase activity levels and pedestrian traffic as well as safety and security in the area.

This is in part thanks to the landscaped public spaces that will meander throughout the buildings and create pedestrian links to the site’s rail transport service.

Such public spaces are set to repurpose the Flour Mills as a community hub, says project developer Grant Flannigan of EG:

“The Flour Mill is all about great living, established open spaces and connectivity – a place to live, to work and a place where it’s easy for people to get together,” he said.

“With heritage elements repurposed and contemporary style, the Flour Mill of Summer Hill is set to become a community for everyone.”
