Harvard University professor and international housing affordability expert Richard Peiser will share his thoughts on the subject of affordable housing at a public talk organised at the University of Sydney on Thursday, 23 February 2017.

A continuing problem for State and Federal governments in Australia, housing affordability is an important issue that affects everyone. According to Professor Peiser, cities across the world are facing a housing crisis that needs to be remedied to ensure their economies are able to attract and retain young populations that will keep them strong into the future.

Making an interesting observation, he says housing is not just about supply, but demand too; demand being not just the number of people but their incomes and ability to afford it.

Peiser will share the lessons learnt from around the globe for delivering affordable housing, focussing on some of the new tools and methods being used to deliver quality, affordable housing in other markets around the world. These include ways to facilitate loans for workers in affordable housing, and new finance and tenure strategies. Additionally, the talk will also cover how real estate developers respond to housing market demands, and how to integrate jobs and transport in the delivery of international practices in housing density and access.

Mayor Sally Betts of Waverley Council and Robert Furolo, Director of Strategic Housing Solutions will join Peiser on a panel after the talk to open the conversation to the community housing sector, local government, academia and the public.

Co-presented with Sydney Ideas, the discussion is facilitated by the University of Sydney’s Professor Ed Blakely, founder of the Cities Leadership Institute (previously chair of the Future Cities Collaborative).
