Global architecture firm Grimshaw will design three new stations for the Mernda Rail Extension Project.

The Victorian Government has announced three new state-of-the-art stations at Marymede, Mernda and Hawkstowe to be built as part of the nearly $600-million Mernda Rail Extension Project. Grimshaw will work with John Holland who has been awarded the contract to construct the project.

A project initiated to connect thousands of residents to trains for the first time, the Mernda Rail Extension comprises of approximately 8km of new duplicated rail line between South Morang station and Mernda; a Premium Station at Mernda and a further two stations at Marymede and Hawkstowe; three rail bridges and two road underpasses; and train stabling in Mernda. The project also includes cycling and pedestrian paths and improved bus connections. Extensive bike storage and space for up to 2,000 cars across the three stations are expected to support the needs of more than 8,000 passengers a day.

Grimshaw Principal Jason Embley said their design proposal considered the semi-rural aspect of the region as well as the need to support one of Australia’s fastest growing communities. He explained that the station forms drew inspiration from the traditional Australian homestead, while stone and wood recovered from the site will be reused in the building’s finishes.

Describing the Mernda Rail Extension as another important project in their portfolio of metropolitan station designs, Grimshaw Partner Neil Stonell said they greatly supported the commitment of the Victorian Government and the State Premier, Daniel Andrews, to the continuing investment in progressive public transport initiatives across the state.

Construction of the Mernda Rail Extension will begin next year, and trains will be running on the new line by 2019.
