Georges River 16ft Sailing Club, one of Botany Bay’s most prominent waterfront venues, has entered the final phase of an extensive $10-million renovation led by Loucas Architects, which will deliver a contemporary and enduring venue that sits in harmony with its coastal surroundings and serves the community well into the future.

Located on the shores of Botany Bay in Sandringham, the club boasts panoramic views of Dolls Point Beach and the Georges River. Working with Loucas Architects on the redevelopment are Evolve Constructions and Hale & Co for the interiors with the project managed by Empire Project Management.

“It’s quite an exposed location, so there is a need to balance visual appeal with resilience,” said Paul Richardson, CEO of Alt. Hospitality Group (formerly Illawarra Catholic Club). “The design takes cues from the Mediterranean – not in a literal sense, but through a relaxed elegance and materials that feel timeless. We wanted this to be a venue that felt like it belonged right here on the bay.”

The final phase of the renovation will see a complete revamp of the bar and brasserie, improvements to both indoor and outdoor gaming areas, and the introduction of a striking new sports lounge with a central big screen. A semi-outdoor dining space with operable louvres will offer uninterrupted bay views, seamlessly connecting the interior with the outdoors.

The latest renovation follows the successful 2023 upgrade of the club’s function rooms, which now accommodate weddings, corporate gatherings, and community events against a backdrop of expansive ocean vistas.

Sustainability and functionality have been prioritised throughout the redevelopment. The renovation is taking place within the original building envelope, maximising natural light and views, while durable, low-maintenance finishes ideal for busy hospitality settings are being employed. Accessibility has also been an important consideration, with a new lift and central staircase ensuring inclusive access throughout the venue.

As the club approaches its 100th anniversary in 2027, this revitalisation represents a forward-looking investment that respects its heritage while setting the stage for a new generation of social connection, dining, and celebration on the bay.

“We’re incredibly proud of what’s taking shape,” says Richardson. “It’s not just a new fitout; it’s a thoughtfully designed coastal venue that invites the community to gather, celebrate and experience the best of waterside living – whether it’s a casual lunch, a major milestone or a work event. This is a venue built to stand the test of time, again.”

To facilitate the completion of construction works, the club will temporarily close starting Monday 12 May, with plans to reopen in late September this year.
