Foster + Partners has launched Civic Vision, its first comprehensive exhibition in Australia, showcasing nearly six decades of the firm’s global architectural innovations since its founding by Norman Foster in 1967.

Hosted at Parkline Place, Foster + Partners’ latest Australian project, developed by Investa on behalf of Oxford Properties Group and Mitsubishi Estate Asia, the exhibition explores the practice’s contribution to the urban environment and infrastructure. By featuring early projects alongside recent developments, Civic Vision bridges past achievements with contemporary aspirations, inspiring new perspectives on the city of today – and tomorrow.

“We are delighted to be putting on this first-of-its-kind exhibition in Sydney – a city we have been working in for more than 25 years,” says Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners. “This is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on our holistic approach to civic architecture, which has underpinned our work since the 1960s, and continues to evolve to meet the challenges of today.”

Organised around three themes – Community + Culture, Living + Working, and Planning + Mobility – Civic Vision presents a mix of the practice’s Australian projects as well as international works, including Sydney landmarks such as Deutsche Bank Place and Salesforce Tower at Sydney Place, and ground-breaking designs for the iconic Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters and the Hong Kong International Airport, London’s famous ‘Gherkin’, Berlin’s Reichstag German Parliament, and the forthcoming Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi.

Beyond architecture, the exhibition also celebrates Foster + Partners’ enduring commitment to sustainability and civic wellbeing. Since the 1960s, the practice’s work has extended beyond technological innovation to consider more social ends, designing environmental masterplans and carbon-neutral cities while exploring how sustainable design can renew the quality of our urban life.

“It is a great privilege to showcase the practice’s work in Parkline Place – a project that we have been working on for the past six years – and the new home for our Sydney studio. Our projects in the city exemplify the civic and sustainable approach that the exhibition centres on. From our first Sydney project, Deutsche Bank Place, which features a four-storey public plaza at its base, to our work for Sydney Metro that is transforming the way thousands of people travel across the city,” adds Muir Livingstone, Partner, Foster + Partners.

Civic Vision will be open until 21 December 2025 at Level 2, Parkline Place, 252 Pitt Street, Sydney.
