The new program offers opportunities for audiences to step inside award-winning projects by some of Perth’s most respected architectural practices, including spaceagency, vittinoAshe and MDC Architects.

Alongside project tours, the series will present engaging conversations with designers across disciplines, highlighting the collaborative processes and creative ideas that shape the built environment.

Opening the year is DesignFreo Conversation 12, featuring UK-born, Fremantle-based interior designer and stylist Jessica Rayment of Jessica Alice Design and Studio Plinth. The event will take place in her warehouse studio — an eclectic showcase of furniture, objects and artworks that demonstrates her strong advocacy for local designers and artists, as well as her distinctive curatorial perspective.

The second event on the calendar, DesignFreo On Location 21, will tour a thoughtfully designed family residence by acclaimed firm Philip Stejskal Architecture. Reflecting DesignFreo’s focus on homes that prioritise quality over scale and champion sustainable outcomes, the visit will include insights from Stejskal and the homeowner.

Together, they will unpack the design and construction process, with particular attention to a carefully resolved floorplan and the use of tactile materials that create warmth and comfort.

In October, the program will culminate in the third Fremantle Design Week — a biennial celebration of design and ideas that first launched in 2022 as Western Australia’s inaugural design week. This year’s edition will present more than 60 events under the theme ‘Imagine.’ Designed as a walkable festival, it will once again activate Fremantle’s historic West End, embedding design experiences throughout the fabric of the port city.

Established in 2020, DesignFreo is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fostering a strong design culture in Western Australia by connecting the wider community with industry professionals.

Through advocacy and public engagement, the group seeks to break down misconceptions about design, demonstrating that thoughtful design is neither exclusive nor superficial, but accessible and essential. At its core, the organisation promotes the idea that good design enhances everyday life and contributes to a fairer, healthier society.

With a design community that consistently achieves national and international recognition, Fremantle provides fertile ground for creative exchange. DesignFreo continues to offer a platform for both local and visiting practitioners, bringing meaningful design dialogue into the public sphere.
