HASSELL’s design for Darwin’s new Convention Centre has scooped three major regional awards, including the Northern Territory’s most prestigious architecture prize.

Announced on Friday, the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2009 Northern Territory Architecture Awards saw the centre scoop the Tracy Memorial Award, the Reverend John Flynn Award for Public Architecture and the Colorbond Award for Steel Architecture. The centre was designed by HASSELL in association with Crawford Architects.

HASSELL also received the Award for Urban Design for the Darwin Waterfront Master Plan, with the Convention Centre being a pivotal project in this much-anticipated development.

Presenting the awards, the jury said: “The architects have developed an entirely functional and enjoyable flow of spaces which overview the public domain, and the harbor while progressing through well arranged and very adaptable meeting and conferencing facilities. This is a masterful piece of public architecture and a proud addition to the Darwin Waterfront.”

A strong field of architectural projects were entered in this year’s awards from across the Northern Territory, including Darwin, Katherine, and Alice Springs.

Another major award winner was Urban Trajectories by Troppo Architects NT, which received two awards and a commendation including the Key Frey Award for Residential Architecture — Multiple Housing, and the People’s Choice Award.

The jury said: “This is a private development for 17 houses generally semi-detached on a relatively small site previously used as a bowling green.”

Given the site’s restrictive containment within roads and existing development, designing a viable and innovative precinct would “not have been easy”, the jury said. However, the architects had developed a “delightful residential precinct” which elicits a strong sense of pride and community.

All award winners are now in the running for the National Architecture Awards, to be announced in Melbourne in late October.
