Australian firm Cox Architecture has been shortlisted along with seven other international architecture teams to revamp FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium.

The expected $657 million development involves plans to add a larger roof canopy and to expand the venue’s capacity to fit a total of 105,000 spectators, cementing its status as largest stadium in the world.

Cox along with consortium partners HKS and Batlle i Roid Architects will give a detailed brief on the design for the renovation to Barcelona executives on Monday.

The architecture firm has a history of stadium and sports facility work in Australia including The Adelaide Oval redevelopment, and is also part of the consortium picked in January to design and build the Tokyo 2020 Olympic aquatic centre.

Cox has already worked with HKS on the new $1billion,60,000-seat Perth stadium project which was joint designed by Hassell and Cox and is set to be completed at the start of AFL season in early 2018.
