Developers GPT Group (GPT) has commenced building work on the Wollongong Central expansion, the $200 million retail development designed by architects Rice Daubney.

Following extensive preparation works to ensure the site’s readiness and safety, Michael Cameron, GPT CEO and Managing Director, along with The Minister for the Illawarra, The Hon. Greg Pearce MLC and Wollongong Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery, officially declared construction underway this morning.

Totalling 18,000 sqm, the expansion will deliver the a new major supermarket to the city centre, 80 new specialty stores and more than 600 additional car spaces, while connecting seamlessly with the existing centre.

Food will be a key retail focus as the expansion seeks to respond to a dramatic undersupply in the heart of the city and will deliver new experiences and opportunities to locals.

The expansion will create 800 permanent retail jobs, deliver new retail, food and entertainment choices to the people of the Illawarra and significantly contribute to the revitalisation of the Wollongong CBD.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery said the extension will play a significant part in the revitalisation of Wollongong City Centre.

“The Wollongong Central extension is one of the most significant developments in the Illawarra region. GPT’s investment, together with the $15 million earmarked by Wollongong City Council for the Crown Street Mall Refurbishment, will be major catalysts for the transformation of the CBD, consolidating Wollongong as a leading business investment location for NSW.”

Michael Cameron, CEO and Managing Director ofThe GPT Group said today’s commencement of construction was an important mark in the evolution of the Wollongong CBD.

The expansion is set to take two years to complete.
