Burwood RSL is set to enter a new era with the planned redevelopment of Club Burwood – one of Sydney’s oldest community clubs – into a $230-million mixed-use precinct that will combine entertainment, events, hospitality, dining and wellness offerings in a 19-storey complex beside Burwood Station.

Designed by global architecture and design practice Buchan, the project will relocate the iconic club to a consolidated 11,270sqm site on George Street, Burwood. The development will span approximately 38,100sqm and is intended to create a new entertainment and hospitality destination for Sydney's inner west.

The project will be delivered in two stages, beginning with a four-storey entertainment podium incorporating restaurants, cafés, lounges, family recreation areas and children's play spaces, alongside venues for events and cultural activities.

The second stage will introduce a 200-room, 4.5-star luxury hotel above the entertainment podium. Hotel amenities will include a lap pool, rooftop sky bar, signature restaurant and outdoor terraces offering panoramic views across the Sydney skyline.

"Club Burwood is conceived not as a larger version of the traditional RSL, but as a super club – a vertical mixed-use precinct that places community, entertainment and hospitality at the heart of Burwood's town centre," explains Buchan Principal Anthony Palamara.

"Our design reimagines the Club as a day-night entertainment destination, catering to a broad demographic and creating a place where people choose to gather, celebrate and spend time together – a generational commitment to Burwood's future."

The entertainment podium has been designed to engage with the surrounding streetscape, with glazed areas providing views into entertainment, dining and theatre spaces. Its facilities will include a sports bar and micro-brewery, a large events venue for performances, conferences and cultural programs, and a rooftop restaurant and terrace.

A dedicated wellness floor will add a day spa, gym and yoga studio, while approximately 1,250 basement car spaces across six levels will serve club members, visitors and hotel guests.

The architectural expression takes cues from Burwood's built heritage, combining elements inspired by Victorian and Federation-era architecture with contemporary detailing. Brickwork, bronze and expansive glazing will form the principal material palette.

Buchan has worked on the project since its inception in 2015, leading its design development through the Development Application as well as a design excellence process for the club and Concept Development Approval for the hotel. Additional site acquisitions over the course of the project enabled the scheme to be revised and expanded.

The redevelopment follows more than a decade of design development and consultation with stakeholders and Burwood Council. Early construction works are scheduled to begin in mid-2026.
