The "Echo Orbit" catenary structures in Brisbane epitomise the benefits of architectural rigging. A light-weight network of stainless steel cables working together to support the 155m² art work designed by local Brisbane artist Sandra Selig.

The catenary cable system was designed and built by Jakob Rope Systems partner, Innovative Rigging, using a combination of 19mm & 6mm cables totalling 1400m, along with customised clamps and fittings.

Innovative Rigging and Jakob assisted as consultants through the design development process, providing a methodology and details to bring the work to life. Engineering design and certification was also completed to ensure an efficient and safe build. The installation was conducted on time and budget, due to the excellence of Innovative Rigging’s team.

While in this case the focus of the catenary was suspension of the artwork, it is more common to utilise catenary structures to suspend lights over public spaces. These systems allow for pin-point accuracy in lighting design while providing clear open space underneath. The inherent tensile strength of a stainless cable enables large distances to be spanned, leaving pole free usable areas.
