A major construction project in the Shandong province in eastern China has adopted a game-changing solution to the growing problem of environmental pollution during urban development by installing a giant inflatable dome over the entire building site.

Located in the heart of the Honglou commercial area in Shandong’s capital city, Jinan, the Honglou 1905 project is a significant urban renewal initiative jointly developed by China Energy Construction Group and Licheng Urban Development Group. The entire project site is enclosed within an inflatable dome standing 50 metres high and covering an area of 20,000 square metres to minimise dust, fume and noise emissions, and allow all-weather construction and extended working hours.

Made from UV-stable, flame-retardant polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) plastic, the heat-reflective dome uses controlled air pressure to stay upright without any support columns or beams, while the transparent membrane panels allow natural light to enter, reducing the need for artificial lighting and lowering energy use. The entire structure is anchored with steel tension cables to protect against strong winds. While negative air pressure zones prevent dust emissions, industrial-grade air filtration and water misting systems clean the air before it’s released outside.

Early tests reveal that the construction dome not only captures 90 per cent of dust particles but also reduces noise by 80 per cent. Even as the immediate neighbourhood benefits from the reduced noise and environmental pollution, construction workers employed on the site enjoy a healthier work environment thanks to the fresh, breathable air being circulated continuously within the dome, with intelligent sensors tracking every parameter including temperature, pressure and air quality.

Developed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation and manufactured by Xide Air Dome, the Honglou dome took ten hours to be completely inflated. Aside from serving as an efficient dust barrier and noise shield to mitigate environmental pollution concerns during construction, the inflatable dome also allows building work to continue throughout the year regardless of wind, rain or snow, helping ramp up construction speed to meet project targets.

The enclosure is designed for fast assembly and disassembly, allowing it to be reused on other construction sites.

The implementation of the inflatable dome in China represents a breakthrough solution for development companies throughout the world, providing a pathway to sustainable, environmentally-safe construction, especially on mega projects in densely populated urban locations.
