The World Architecture Festival (WAF) – the world’s largest architectural awards program – has released its shortlist for the 2017 round of awards. This year has drawn more entries than ever before; according to the program, 924 projects have been submitted, representing an 18 percent increase from last year.

The recently revealed awards shortlist includes architectural practices from 51 nations, and projects spanning 68 countries. Within these shortlisted projects sit a significant number of Australian entries.

“This year’s shortlist has a hugely diverse geographic range,” says Paul Finch, WAF program director. “The use of water has been striking and there is evidence of real interest in climate modifications using novel techniques.

“Colourful architecture makes a strong showing and many of the smaller projects we have shortlisted will punch above their weight. We look forward to welcoming shortlisted architects to our tenth edition in Berlin this November.”

The awards are divided across 30 categories of architecture, with finalists to go onto separate awards in the building, landscape and future project categories respectively. A total of 43 Australian projects have made the 2017 WAF shortlist, 30 of which appear in the building category.

Australian practices and projects demonstrating particular success in single dwellings and healthcare facilities this year. Of 17 shortlisted housing projects, six were Australian. Three out of ten healthcare facilities on the 2017 WAF shortlist are from Australia.

All shortlisted practices for the 2017 World Architecture Festival are now invited to present their projects at an event to be held in Berlin from 15 to 17 November this year. From there, category winners will go on to compete for either the World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, or Landscape of the Year.
