2015 Timber Vision Awards reflect resurgent and reinvented material
A guide to large timber façade applications

The 2015 Australian Timber Design Awards were announced September 18 at an awards night in Melbourne.

A total of 23 prizes were handed out to architects and designers who used timber as a major component of a project or application, including everything from timber windows and floors to full large-scale buildings.

The Australian Timber Design Award, the major prize of the program, went to John Wardle Architects and NADAAA for the Melbourne School of Design, described by the event’s team as an inspiring example of complex green design.

Judges were also effusive in their praise for the manner in which the timber framed and lined building envelope is suspended from two of the overhead LVL beams.

“The three-storey Melbourne School of Design is a showcase of the very best that can be achieved with structural timber,” reads the program’s media release.

“The selection and working of the timbers shows exceptional understanding of the material and lends warmth to the complex structural design.”

John Wardle Architects were joined by a host of big name firms who were category prize winners on the night including Gehry Partners for their contribution to the UTS Business School - Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, Fender Katsalidis Mirams Architects for Garangula Gallery, Cox Architecture for Box Office and Duckbuild Architecture for Red Hill House.
