Melbourne Polytechnic's Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence has launched Australia's first accredited qualification in prefabrication installation, responding to the construction industry's growing shift toward modular and offsite building methods.

Australia now has a dedicated pathway into the fast-growing world of modern construction. Melbourne Polytechnic's Future of Housing Construction Centre of Excellence has launched the country's first accredited qualification in prefabrication installation, with a pilot intake of the Certificate III in Prefabrication Installation underway at its Heidelberg Campus.

The qualification was launched by Federal Minister for Skills and Training Andrew Giles MP, alongside Victorian Minister for Skills and TAFE Colin Brooks MP, and Member for Ivanhoe Anthony Carbines MP. It responds directly to the construction industry's growing shift toward modular, panelised and pod-based building systems, as Australia confronts mounting pressure to increase housing supply while improving affordability and sustainability.

Delivered through a mix of online learning, workplace training, and hands-on blocks that simulate real prefabrication installation environments, the Certificate III prepares graduates for roles including Prefabrication Installer, Modular Construction Worker, Offsite Manufacturing Technician, and Construction Trades Assistant.

The course covers communication, teamwork, safety and problem-solving skills required to work effectively in modern methods of construction (MMC) environments, giving industry access to a pipeline of appropriately trained installers ready to adopt these methods at scale.

Frances Coppolillo, Chief Executive of Melbourne Polytechnic, says the Centre is working closely with industry to identify emerging workforce needs and translate them quickly into practical training. "For students, this means developing the hands-on skills and confidence to work with prefabricated building systems and join a growing area of construction," she adds.

Damien Crough, Executive Chairman of prefabAUS, says the qualification addresses a critical gap in the sector. "The future of construction depends on people as much as technology. This qualification gives industry confidence that graduates will have the practical skills needed to deliver high-quality prefabricated buildings at scale," he says.

Federal Minister Andrew Giles says the qualification supports Australia's broader housing ambitions. "Building more homes, more efficiently starts with building the skilled workforce Australia needs," he says.

Victorian Minister for Skills and TAFE Colin Brooks notes the scale of the challenge. "Victoria's construction sector employs nearly 350,000 people. New technology means new skills. This course makes sure our tradies are ready for it," he says.
