Five major prizes were awarded to architecture projects at the 2016 Good Design Awards ceremony, held recently in Sydney.

Taking home the top Architectural Design award was Sydney’s newest laneway and eat street destination, ‘Kensington Street’ which was designed by Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, Paul Davies & Associates with public domain and landscape architecture by Turf Design Studio and Jeppe Aagaard Andersen.

The project involved a combination of significant heritage restoration of the street’s old terrace housing, the Old Clare Hotel and the former Carlton United Administration Building, along with new upgrades and retail injections sensitive to the site’s history.

Kensington Street received the Best Overall award for Architectural Design as well as the Urban Design & Public Spaces category prize, ahead of a formidable field which included the UTS Alumni green, Glenelg Foreshore Playspace and the New Flood Resilient Brisbane Ferry Terminals.

Another top performer was a collaborative project by Hassell’s Ken McBride with Kacey Bridge, Interior Life and Dindas. Their Nevhouse project, a suite of cyclone-rated affordable homes, schools and medical clinics made from recycled plastic and other waste products, took out the Good Design Award for Sustainability as well as the Best in Category, Commercial and Residential Architecture Award.

The final Best in Category award was for Interior Design and it went to Ian Moore Architects for its recently completed 30 Adelaide Street project, a restoration of one of the firm’s old projects, completed in 2001.

The project saw the restoration of the house back to its original intent which was lost after the house was unsympathetically renovated by the previous owners. Ian Moore took out the rooftop bedroom which had been added and reinstated the original louvred roof terrace. They also reversed the numerous internal alterations made by the previous owner to create clarity of the space and a strong focus on the link between interior and exterior.

The Goods Line by Aspect Studios received the newly added 202020 Award.

The Good Design Award of the Year went a self-flowing beehive called Flow Frame, designed by NSW duo, Cedar and Stuart Anderson.
