Co-authored by Architecture architecture Director Michael Roper, the book examines four major residential projects that span the breadth of Couch’s career, offering a rare and considered insight into his architectural practice.

Paul Couch, field studies brings together essays by Juhani Pallasmaa, Philip Goad, Michael Roper and James Mugavin, alongside a photographic essay by Tom Ross that explores the influence of local rock formations on Couch’s architecture.

The publication also includes a brief meditation on concrete by the architect himself. The material is presented in a hardcover volume designed by multi–award-winning book designer Stuart Geddes.

Each project is documented through Couch’s original hand drawings, a written essay and a photographic essay. Extracts from a series of interviews further introduce the reader to Couch’s voice, distilling the ideas, images, memories and aspirations that underpin his work.

For more than six decades, Couch has devoted himself to creating substantial architectural works, rarely pausing to document his achievements or speak publicly about them. As a result, much of his built work has remained largely unrecognised.
