Parramatta City Council has selected 19 urban design concepts which aim to map out the future of Parramatta's city centre on 15 sites.

Architecture firms such as HASSELL, Cox Richardson Architects and Planners, Andrew Burns Architect, BKK Architects, Glas Urban Design & Landscape Architecture, TERROIR, DRAW were amongst 80 contributors with various backgrounds submitting design concepts.

Each firm was part of a multi-disciplinary design team which collaborated together.

Design Parramatta is a collaborative project between Parramatta City Council and the NSW Government Architects Office. Students from the University of Sydney also took part in a parallel student project.

The Lord Mayor of Parramatta John Chedid said: “This project is about re-imagining our City, especially spaces that are run down, underused, neglected and need rejuvenation. Some of the places we identified included Church Street Mall and the River foreshore,” Chedid said.

“Revitalising these areas will provide our residents, workers and visitors with a better experience of the City.

“The concepts from Design Parramatta will also complement the city building projects that Council already has underway, such as Parramatta Square. It will also be used as a blue print for Council to prioritise works and lobby the State and Federal Governments for funding."

Council’s endorsement of the program coincides with the completion of resources that illustrate the complexity, talent and innovation displayed during the concepts’ design process. A digital book is currently available on the website with hardcopies to be released in early 2013; an 18-minute video is also available on the Design Parramatta website.
