The Western Australian Government has announced that they are looking for a developer to design, build, finance and maintain a new $900 million, 60 000 seat stadium in Burswood, Perth.

It has been specified that international developers are welcome to express their interest with a shortlist of the best to be made in February 2013.

The Project Definition Plan for the stadium outlines environmentally sustainable design is a factor and looks at other Australian stadiums which have used recycled materials, passive ventilation, lighting, water harvesting and the use of photovoltaic cells like the Metricon Stadium in Queensland.

The government has specified that the stadium will have input from potential users who will help determine what design elements and amenities they would like included in the final architectural plan.

One of the key design features that will need to be incorporated will be the shape of the oval which will need to provide 'best viewing experiences regardless of whether you’re watching an oval sport or rectangular sport'.

The aim is to provide a comfort level similar to Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium and 'take advantage of its Swan River views and central location'.

Initial planning for the new stadium is due to be completed by mid 2012, followed by a detailed procurement process for the design and construction of the stadium. Construction is due to start in 2014 and completion for the 2018 AFL season.

Treasurer Troy Buswell said:

“The Government expects a range of local and international talent to bring their expertise in major infrastructure design and construction to Perth, to ultimately deliver an outstanding facility to enhance Perth’s reputation as a world-class destination.”

Premier Colin Barnett added:

“This represents a major milestone in the new Perth Stadium project, as it is the first step in engaging with the consortia that will help the State to deliver the stadium and its surrounding sports precinct.”
