Stage one of M&L Hospitality’s $160 million redevelopment of Four Points hotel at Sydney’s Darling Harbour has commenced and will include a new 25 storey tower and Sydney’s largest pillar-less ballroom.

Designed by Cox Richardson Architects, the project will see the Four Points, Sheraton hotel expand over the nearby Western Distributor freeway and include an expansive convention, exhibition and meeting space, a new dining precinct and improved public areas for pedestrians.

The 90-metre tower will be clad in floor to ceiling glass to maximise natural light and uninterrupted water views of Darling Harbour for the 222 additional hotel rooms. Cox Richardson have also added vertical louvres and low reflection materials to the initial design on the advice from The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and NSW Heritage Office who said full glazing could reflect light into the eyes of drivers on the Western Distributor.

The interior of the tower’s podium was designed by Bates Smart architects and will include 4,810sqm of convention space, making it one of the largest ballrooms without pillars in Sydney. The space will include two ballrooms in total with seating up to 1,100 theatre-style, 11 breakout/meeting rooms, dedicated pre-function space and state of the art audio visual technology.

Already Australia’s largest hotel, the additional 25-storey tower will add 222 new guest rooms to the Four Points hotel, bringing the total number of rooms to over 900 on completion in 2016.
