Melbourne Festival, Creative Victoria and Yarra Trams are inviting professional Victorian artists and designers to submit proposals that will transform Melbourne trams – from the latest low-floor trams through to the historic W-Class tram – into dynamic public art works.

A successful public art project that is into its third year, the 2015 Melbourne Art Trams is being presented in partnership with MPavilion, and seeks artwork proposals that respond to the theme, ‘Architecture and the City’.

It comes off the back of the second Melbourne Art Trams project, which comes to a close after six months on the tracks, with hundreds of thousands of Melburnians and visitors experiencing the mobile art works designed by Jeff Makin, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Kristin Headlam, James Cattell, Christian Thompson, Janine Daddo and emerging artist, Callum Croker.

“Victoria is defined by its art, architecture, design and creativity. This year, the Melbourne Art Trams celebrate what makes this city unique, and will once again bring great works to our streets,” says Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley MP.

The project is a revival of the Transporting Art program that ran from 1978 to 1993, and resulted in 36 painted trams being rolled out across the Melbourne network.
