Tanner Kibble Denton (TKD) Architects and Tanner GHD have taken out the top prize at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards in Brisbane for the Brisbane City Hall Restoration project.

Commencing in 2009, the project comprised the restoration, adaptation and fire services upgrade to the 1930s building. Foundations and interior walls have since been restored, the grand ballroom re-fashioned, and new interiors that match the heritage features introduced.

A new roof has also been added for the Museum of Brisbane, while the upgrades now accommodate for major performance spaces, conference facilities and offices of the Council and Lord Mayor.

Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection Andrew Powell said the restoration successfully balanced the original design of the building with contemporary amenities and new energy efficient services to secure the building’s sustainable future.

“Brisbane City Hall is now a restored and vibrant meeting place – re-equipped for its role as the focus for Brisbane’s civic, cultural, and social events,” he praised.

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards received 120 nominations this year, with Rocklea-based Groundworks receiving the 2014 Minister’s Award for Leadership in Sustainability for Ecoblanket – a world-first method of large scale revegetation.

St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School in Corinda, Brisbane Airport Corporation, and mining and construction companies Thiess, Saipem Australia and Santos were amongst the other winners.

Collinsville graziers Barry and Leanne O’Sullivan also received an award for innovative improvements to their cattle property using the grazing industry’s ‘Best Management Practice’ program.

The awards aim to celebrate the integral role industry, school and community groups can play in improving environmental outcomes. Each category winner received $2,500 to support their ongoing sustainability projects.
