Abigroup Contractors has won the prestigious national building award from the Master Builders Association (MBA) for the Mater Hospital Newcastle Redevelopment project (PPP) in Newcastle.

The award for the Public Private Partnership (PPP) project was won in the National Public Buildings over $50 million category and was announced at a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra in November 2010.

Master Builders chief executive Wilhelm Harnisch says: “Despite difficult economic circumstances, the winners demonstrated the highest commitment to quality, safety and in delivering value for money to the client and setting a very high standard for the industry.”

The judges made special mention of the Mater Hospital project’s alternative central energy plant design which substantially reduced the hospital’s operational costs as well as the team’s ability to keep the hospital fully operational throughout the three and a half year project.

Abigroup’s managing director David Jurd says: “It’s great to see Abigroup’s project team being recognised on the national stage with this prestigious award.

“The Mater Hospital Newcastle redevelopment was a complex project which involved the full redevelopment of the existing hospital while still keeping medical services fully operational. It also was the first hospital to be developed under a PPP in NSW.”

The Mater Hospital Newcastle project also recently won the National award at the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) Professional Excellence in Building when Abigroup’s project director Greg Sweeny won in the National Commercial Construction $100 million plus category for his role on the project.

The other awards won by the project include:

· NSW AIB 2010 Professional Excellence in Building Awards — Commercial Construction $100 million plus category

· 2010 Infrastucture Partnerships Australia - Government Partnership Excellence Award Finalist

· 2010 Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards — Large-Scale Development Award (Commercial/Industrial)

· MBA 2006 Excellence in Construction Awards: Joint Winner Site Safety Award — Commercial Projects $50 million plus category.
