The Adelaide Festival of Architecture and Design kicks off Thursday 8 October and will run for four days, culminating with an industry forum on Tuesday 13 October.

There are a host of events that encourage the community to participate in and enjoy the history, culture and future of Adelaide architecture and others that aim to develop and strengthen relationships and the distribution of information among the architecture community.

Here are some highlights:

THURSDAY

Don’t miss: Living Building Conversations No.6: Waste in the Built Environment

About: ‘Living Building Conversations’ is a year-long discussion series hosted by the Adelaide Sustainable Building Network. Each Conversation brings together a panel of Adelaide professionals in a Q&A type format to break down specific principles and requirements of the Living Building Challenge, a framework for regenerative environments.

In this conversation the panel which includes input from GHD Woodhead’s Mark Separovic and Dino Vyrnios from Grieve Gillet Andersen Architects, will discuss the many facets of ‘Waste’ in the Built Environment. How do we design buildings to reduce raw material use or extend material life? How do we look at waste as a resource? Where does waste from construction and our daily lives go? What lifestyle choices can we make to divert waste from landfill?

FRIDAY

Need to know: 1:00pm - 2:00pm, Tour meeting point at South Australian Health and Medical Institute North Terrace.

About: Take a special tour through the multi award-winning centre for research, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute. Led by architects Woods Bagot, gain an insight into the buildings sculptural qualities, the transparent facade and its unique triangulated dia-grid facade which adapts and responds to its environment, becoming a living organism that responds to the position of the sun.

SATURDAY

Don't miss: E J Woods: A Legacy of Elegance and Innovation

Need to know: 11:00am - 1:00pm. Tour meeting point at Ayers House Museum, 288 North Terrace. Cost: $15

About: EJ Woods, one of Adelaide’s finest colonial architects, worked at the edge of design and technical innovation.

This guided walking tour enables participants to appreciate the contribution of one of our most significant architects and a founder of one of Adelaide’s greatest architectural practices Woods Bagot.

Using the Adelaide City Explorer mobile app produced by the National Trust of South Australia www.adelaidecityexplorer.com.authis tour of some of the city’s most important heritage listed buildings provides a rich insight into Woods’ work and legacy.

Don’t Miss: Open City

Adelaide Town Hall

Need to know: 10 October, 9:00am - 4:00pm

About: The Open City program offers visitors the chance to peek behind the scenes of an historically significant, awarded or unusual space to discover the gems that lie within.

About: A short film by Greg Grabasch will explore the gender concerns faced within contemporary practice, ways in which the profession could better support women, and more appropriate ways to address potential gender imbalances.

Following the film will be a robust discussion of design professionals, including Sharon Mackay - DPC, Sarah Paddick - Total Space Design, Susanna Bilardo - Enoki, with special guest film maker and landscape architect Greg Grabasch - UDLA (WA).

TUESDAY

Don’t miss: Future Forum: The Age of the Driverless Car

About: For the Festival of Architecture and Design, Future Forum will bring together the Premier of South Australia, the Hon. Jay Weatherill, and an expert panel curated by FAD Creative Director Dino Vrynios to explore the flow on effect the driverless car will have on other industries and in particular the role architects and designers will play in facilitating the technology.

About: This exhibition will run for the duration of the Festival of Architecture and Design and feature architectural models from South Australian practices, including Woods Bagot, HASSELL, Taylor Buchtmann, Mulloway Studio, Tridente Architects, Scholz Vinall, Grieve Gillett Andersen Architects, KHAB Architects, the University of SA and the University of Adelaide, promises to be an interesting survey of the varying techniques and material used to progress the design phase of a new project.
