The Northern Rivers region is set to gain 50 new rental homes with construction work beginning on a new BTR project being delivered by the NSW Government’s property and land developer, Landcom.

Located in East Lismore, the development is a first-of-its-kind project for the region aimed at boosting affordable and secure rental options, with 20% of the homes dedicated to affordable housing for those on low and moderate household incomes, such as essential workers who play a vital role in supporting the local community.

The development addresses the ongoing housing stress in the area, where rising rents and a shortage of smaller homes have left many single and two-person households struggling to find suitable accommodation. The new rental housing complex will feature a variety of apartments, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, designed to meet the needs of diverse renters.

Located close to shops, schools, services, the Southern Cross University, and other community facilities, the project promises convenient access to key local amenities for future residents.

Landcom has appointed FK Gardner & Sons as head contractor to lead the construction, which is expected to finish in late 2026. The NSW Government will retain ownership of the completed property.

Part of the Minns Labor Government’s broader housing strategy, this initiative follows similar BTR projects across New South Wales, including 400 homes for essential workers in Sydney and 60 new homes currently under construction on the South Coast.

“This project will help provide greater housing security and choice for renters in Lismore, delivering 50 new BTR units, which bolster both housing supply and diversity,” says Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully.

“As one of the first ever BTR projects outside a major city, this development will test a new housing type for regional areas that could be rolled out in other parts of the state,” he adds.

Underlining the need to support the Lismore community through long-term housing security, Minister for the North Coast and Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin observes, “These 50 new built to rent homes will be a lifesaver – beautifully designed apartments in a well-located area and above the flood zone.”

“We are building back better, ensuring our community has affordable and resilient housing for the future.”
