Sometimes unfairly viewed as merely the finish that goes overhead, the ceiling is one of the most important considerations of any project. When it comes to specifying ceilings, a decision must be made on the type of material used – the two main choices being metal and mineral fibre. Each material has advantages, disadvantages, and some misconceptions associated with it.

So here are four things you must consider before deciding on what type of ceiling is best for your project.

1. Acoustic performance

Most mineral fibre ceilings contain recycled material, however most of it will end up in landfill just 5-10 years after installation.

Metal ceilings by contrast are 100% recyclable without diminishing performance characteristics and contain at least 20% recycled material. Alternatively the material can be reused, or repurposed and holds a significant residual value. Powder coated metal tiles contain no harmful VOCs, offering a highly protective yet environmentally-friendly finish.

4. The Bottom Line

It’s all well and good wanting the absolute best acoustic performance and having a commitment to the environment. But, if it doesn’t fit within budget, chances are it will be overlooked.

Material costs for metal ceilings are on average 20% higher than mineral fibre. This difference is generally allayed through less wastage and cheaper installation of metal ceilings.

Due to its far superior lifespan and minimal required maintenance, metal ceilings work out much better value over the life of the project.
