The Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) has announced the 2014 Australia Award for Urban Design open for nominations.

Broad in scope, the award invites entries from a variety of design initiatives, projects, built developments, and publications. The only requirement is that the project must make a significant improvement to the places, spaces, buildings and infrastructure of our cities.

Hosted by the Planning Institute of Australia, the award recognises recent urban design projects of high quality in Australia and aims to encourage cities, towns and emerging settlements of all sizes to strive for similar improvement.

This is a great awards program looking for the best in urban design across a diverse range of projects,” PIA National President Dyan Currie said at last year’s award.

Entries are assessed against agreed criteria by a jury made up of experienced practitioners from supporting organisations. There are four categories:

Delivered outcome - large scale

Delivered outcome - small scale

Policies, programs and concepts - large scale

Policies, programs and concepts - small scale

Past winners have included works such as the “Northern Busway” (Windsor to Kedron) development, The “Revitalising Central Dandenong” Lonsdale St Redevelopment and the “Linking Canberra City to the Lake” initiative.

"The Australia Award for Urban Design is hosted by the Planning Institute of Australia with support from the Australian Institute of Architects, Property Council of Australia, Green Building Council of Australia, Consult Australia, The Australian Urban Design Forum and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
