Entries from 143 national and international architects have been revealed in the City of Sydney design competition for the new multi-purpose park and aquatic centre at Green Square.

The City has also explained that the 'imaginative proposals' from both emerging and established firms will be scrutinised and whittled down to five finalists by the competition judges at the end of May.

Meanwhile, members of the public are invited to inspect and offer feedback on the entries - which all remain anonymous - which will be used as a report to the jury as part of their deliberations.

The competition is run under rules the City has developed, based on guidelines from the Australian Institute of Architects and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects. Hence, a panel of architects, landscape architects and aquatic experts will provide a shortlist of the best designs in the first stage of the competition.

Competition registrar and adviser, Stephen Varady said once the jury chooses the finalists, the second stage begins and the five remaining entrants develop their stage one designs after receiving feedback from the judges and from the City of Sydney.

The deadline for the second and final stage of the competition is 26 August after which the jury decides the winner.

The five-member jury will be chaired by Carey Lyon from Melbourne, and includes Professor Richard Johnson, Camilla Block, Professor Gini Lee and Greg Holman.

Located on Joynton Avenue, the aquatic centre will be opposite the former South Sydney Hospital, which will be transformed into a creative community centre, with facilities including artists’ studios, a community hall, childcare and healthcare facilities, key worker housing and another public park.

Mayor Clover Moore said a similar competition last year for the new library and plaza in Green Square Town Centre, she was overwhelmed by the number and quality of the entries, “and this new competition is shaping up as another great win for Sydney”.

“We always make a great effort encouraging and promoting good design in our public buildings and I am thrilled so many architects have responded to our invitations by submitting their ideas for the new Aquatic Centre and Gunyama Park - facilities which I know will bring a great deal of pleasure to Green Square residents,” she said.

“Anyone with an interest in good design or in the fast growing community at Green Square should have a look at the entries and let us know their views so we can take them into account."
