Two newly connected buildings in the inner-Sydney suburb of Surry Hills will soon be made part of a boutique hotel, the first the suburb has seen “in decades”.

Paramount House Hotel was designed by Melbourne-based practice Breathe Architects, who were behind Australia’s first Nightingale Housing project. The hotel, which is currently under construction, will repurpose the heritage-protected Paramount House as its lobby and entrance, while the Paramount Picture Studios building – formerly a film storage warehouse – will be transformed into the hotel’s restaurant and guest rooms. Above all of this will sit a two-level, copper-clad roof extension.

Currently, Paramount House is home to Paramount Coffee, a co-working space and the iconic Golden Age Cinema. These amenities will remain operational once the hotel opens.

Paramount House Hotel will have a total of 29 bedrooms, each different from one another. According to the architects, rooms have been designed with the intention of combining heritage and contemporary details – a reflection of Surry Hills more broadly. Most rooms will incorporate an indoor terrace, complete with plenty of greenery.

“It’s the first new boutique hotel developed in Surry Hills in decades,” Russell Beard, one of the three men behind Paramount House Hotel, told The Australian. “We are aiming to please everyone, really. We will be able to offer amenities for both leisure and corporate travellers.”

The hotel’s three founders – Russell Beard, Ping Jin Ng and Mark Dundon – have played an integral role in shaping Sydney’s current hospitality scene. The trio have previously founded the Paramount Coffee Project, Reuben Hills, Seven Seeds, and Bondi Hall. This will be their first hotel project.

Paramount House Hotel is expected to open in January 2018.
