Homelessness is on the rise in Australia with the problem further exacerbated by a shortage of housing.

Data shows that in recent years, there has been an increase in returning clients to specialist homelessness services and those receiving assistance have required longer periods of support.

2023 Good Design Award winner The Calyx Project aims to break that cycle of homelessness through an innovative transitional housing solution with a community focus. Unlike traditional solutions that repurpose existing housing stock or temporarily use motels and share houses, the project utilises the tiny home concept for transitional housing.

Designed by Studio Nine Architects, the homes offer 16sqm of space, and are safe, affordable, modular, transportable, energy-efficient and eco-friendly, designed to be built within villages to foster community and promote reintegration into society.
