Prodigious talents are found everywhere, yet sometimes come from the clouds. Within every sector, every sport, every institution, there is someone who takes their surroundings by storm, and in the built environment this is certainly no different.

The concept of sustainability in the design sphere sees evolving ideas come to the fore on a regular occurrence. These can be brought about by seasoned experts, those who have skin in the game for decades, but there are others that make a difference in a matter of moments, and that is who we aim to celebrate with the Emerging Sustainable Architect / Designer category at the Sustainability Awards.

In order to be eligible for the Emerging Sustainable Architect / Designer award, one must be an architect or designer in their first five years of their career. The award seeks to celebrate an outstanding achievement or development in the field of sustainable and/or environmental architecture planning or design across any of the building categories, and provides architects with a springboard to boost their reputation.

2021’s winner for the ‘Emerging’ category was Sustainable Building & Design Pty Ltd’s David Coates. With 25 years experience in the building industry before becoming an architect, Coates’ projects have sustainability at the forefront of their designs. Coates’s designs centre around efficiency of performance and reuse of materials. Sustainable Building & Design recently built an entire sustainable development using no mains power from an off-grid onsite power station, described as an industry first.

For the first time, Kaolin Tiles sponsors the ‘Emerging’ category in 2022. Kaolin’s manufacturer, Guanxing Ceramics, continues to lead the industry in environmentally sustainable and ethical production practices with its state-of-the-art factory, and smart warehouse, achieving the several Environmental Certification of China and Australia. From top to bottom, Kaolin has sought to ensure its operations are mindful of the environment, with the company’s focus on sustainability ensuring it is an ideal candidate for flooring or wall solutions for Australian architects.

The 2022 Sustainability Awards shapes up as one of the best ever editions of the awards, with the year’s winner of the Emerging Sustainable Architect / Designer category expected to be a budding design luminary that has made quite the splash in a short space of time.
