Biophilia is most certainly a hallmark of modern design. In Brisbane, for example, the Buildings that Breathe guidelines set by local Council ensure that sustainable buildings are adorned with lush plantations that assist in cooling the building and increasing wellbeing.

But as for generating power, the power of plants and biophilic design can most certainly do that as well.

In the upcoming Sustainability Summit session titled How to Use Biophilia to Design Buildings That Generate Their Own Energy, the esteemed panel will zero in on integrating biophilic design principles into contemporary architecture, pushing the boundaries by utilising plants as a power source.

In the face of burgeoning urban populations, governments and city planners are striving to create climate-resilient, low-carbon urban environments that optimise space and reduce ecological footprints.

The imperative is clear: find sustainable solutions to accommodate increasing populations without depleting finite resources. "Biophilic urbanism" has emerged as a crucial design principle in this endeavour, presenting an opportunity to address a spectrum of challenges stemming from climate change, growing urbanisation, and our innate yearning for a connection with nature.

The session, expertly moderated by Chris Jensen from The University of Melbourne, brings together a panel of seasoned sustainability experts to delve into the potential of biophilia in enhancing sustainability. Julieta Loya from Woods Bagot, Daniel Walker from Billi, Claire Martin from Oculus, Miranda Snowdon from Arup, and Sika Specification Consultant Karen Amery, will share their insights and knowledge.
