A lightweight wall system from USG Boral has been specified for the upcoming Meriton ‘Ocean’ apartments situated on the picturesque Gold Coast.

Developed by Meriton, Ocean apartments will be the first beachfront tower constructed by the residential developer. The upmarket development has been planned as a 76-storey super-tower comprising of more than 700 units, including 403 apartments for permanent residents, 319 serviced apartments under the Meriton Suites brand, and five penthouses.

USG Boral’s twin stud wall system has been specified for intertenancy walls – one of the earliest Meriton projects to do so. A new system for the Meriton design team’s portfolio, the USG Boral twin stud wall system will now be a key interior wall solution for future Meriton projects.

The USG Boral twin stud wall system is a lightweight plasterboard solution, which makes it a cost-efficient alternative to other walling systems previously used by Meriton. Redesign work can be actioned quickly during the build, providing architects with more design freedom. The wall system is also a healthier material to work with from a lifting and cutting perspective.

Comprising of Rondo metal stud and track with 16mm USG Boral Firestop on either side of the wall, USG Boral’s lightweight wall system is locally made using natural and recycled materials, creating a fire-rated and high-level acoustic buffer between units, as well as delivering excellent thermal insulation.

The USG Boral twin stud system delivers excellent acoustic benefits, making it ideal for intertenancy applications in residential living projects such as Meriton’s Ocean apartments. Performance testing reveals superior outcomes for reducing critical low frequencies such as those from TV and sound systems, while protecting residents from disturbances in corridors and other apartments. This wall system is perfect for high density living environments, typically found in high rise developments.

“I’m really impressed with the support Meriton has received from USG Boral. This has made the transition from the existing wall system to the twin stud system a lot easier,” said David Cremona, National Director of Construction and Director of Meriton Group.

“Meriton is looking forward to introducing the twin wall system to the NSW projects as both Harry Triguboff and I believe this is the way forward.”

USG Boral has been delivering product for the first five floors of the development since February 2020. More than 220,000 square metres of USG Boral plasterboard has been specified for the super tower, including Firestop, SHEETROCK HD and WETSTOP.

Already two years in development, the Ocean development is on track and due for completion in mid-2022.
