Sikalastic-560, a versatile, ready-to-use liquid membrane from Sika was specified for the leaky roof of an aircraft factory in Cadiz, Spain.
Covering an area of 10,000 square metres, the wave-formed sandwich deck roof featured an insulation layer between two metal decks but had no waterproofing. The water ingress was causing problems internally. The client sought a waterproofing solution with a good price-performance ratio – a durable yet cost-effective system, which could be spray-applied to provide effective water-tightness.
Located in the south of Spain, the building needed air-conditioning for nearly six months of the year, resulting in high cooling costs. Therefore, in addition to the waterproofing, the client also wanted an increase in the energy efficiency of the building. This would be achieved by applying a solar reflective coating to reduce the cooling costs of the factory.
Sikalastic-560 is a cold-applied, one-component liquid membrane that provides guaranteed waterproof protection on curing. The product is highly elastic and UV-resistant, and can be spray-applied, allowing large areas to be coated in a short amount of time.
Sikalastic-560 was specified in white because of its reflective properties, which would help reduce the building’s cooling costs in the hot climate.
Sikalastic-560 can be applied directly onto a variety of different substrates and different geometries, without any need to install an additional substrate component (unlike bituminous sheet solutions). It can be easily applied in both new construction and roof repair projects, allowing the lifespan of existing roofs to be extended.
In addition to white, it is also available in light colours, and has a Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 102, which can enhance energy efficiency by significantly reducing cooling costs over time.
Sika products used at the Cadiz aircraft factory project included Sikalastic metal primer, Sika Flexitape Heavy for reinforcement, and Sikalastic-560 White waterproofing membrane.
