Upside Down Akubra House designed by Alexander Symes Architect was announced as the winner of the Habitus House of the Year 2020 award.

The Habitus House of the Year (HOTY) awards showcase exceptional residential architecture and design across the Indo Pacific region. Rocks On was honoured to be the supporting partner to the HOTY 2020 edition.

At the event hosted by StylecraftHOME, six incredibly diverse designs from a shortlist of 20 amazing houses received special mentions.

Located in Nundle, NSW, Upside Down Akubra House was built by Blue Eco Homes with structural engineering provided by Ascent Consulting Engineers. This rural property speaks to its panoramic landscape setting, with the harsh summer climate of the region informing many of the creative choices throughout the house – in terms of both design and materials palette. While the undisturbed 360-degree view provides harmony between landscape and design, familiar and functional materials such as concrete flooring are used for thermal regulation during the summer months. Additionally, the massive roof blocks out direct sunlight, ensuring living comfort for the residents.

Award winners also included:

People’s Choice Award: Corymbia Beach House by Paul Butterworth Architect; Stradbroke Island, Australia.

Creative Use of Landscape: Bowden House by Belinda George Architect; Tutukaka, New Zealand.
