Platform Lift Company installed two Cama C6 curved platform stairlifts at the Sydney Opera House. The stairlifts were required to create step-free access for the Playhouse Theatre from the foyer in line with the design principles of the original architect, the late Jørn Utzon.

Danish company Cama, the manufacturer of the stairlifts gave personalised attention to the contract with its owner flying to Sydney to assist in the design and installation of the lifts. The installation took place at night to minimise the disruption since the theatre was in use during the day.

The sloping floor and radiused wall necessitated modifications to be carried out in the existing building structure to accommodate the installation. The stairlifts feature fold-out seats, allowing them to be used by patrons on wheelchairs as well as those who are less mobile. Four new wheelchair accessible seating positions were installed with improved sightlines at the mid-theatre entry level.

The two stairlifts, in custom black to blend in with the Playhouse environment, give access to the performances. The lift guide rails match the theatre décor perfectly and are architecturally sensitive to the building’s original features.

When not in use, the Cama stairlifts fold up and park in a recessed alcove out of the way and hidden from view.

Following her visit to the Sydney Opera House, Ms. Jodie De Ruvo, author of www.candoability.com.au said, “...stairlifts are fantastic as they allow access to areas that wheelchairs cannot reach”.
