Timber has been used for thousands of years by humans to build dwellings, shelters and other structures. While the design and use of timber has evolved over the centuries, its popularity as a material for building and furniture hasn’t diminished.

Timber introduces a warm vibe in any space and provides an instant connection to nature. With sustainability and health being the key drivers in any design brief, many builders and architects are exploring ways to introduce materials that not only provide the natural feel, but are actually good for future occupants as well as the environment.

Timber’s popularity continues to grow in residential and commercial applications. Market Timbers takes a look at some of the trending ways timber is being used in buildings and interiors in 2020.

Timber Facades

Vertically aligned timber batten facades create a striking look on buildings. With the focus on sustainable construction, there is greater preference for specifying raw and natural building materials. Often used alongside other exposed building materials such as brick and concrete, timber cladding will suit most design styles.

Popular Australian wood species used for timber cladding include Blackbutt and Spotted Gum – both timbers can be aligned vertically or horizontally depending on the design.

The use of timber cladding adds to the building’s green credentials in many ways: Timber cladding is produced using minimal non-renewable resources; the material is recyclable; and the insulation properties help reduce the home’s energy consumption.

Timber Furniture

After decades of using plastics, metals and composites in furniture, people are reverting to timber as the preferred material for furniture and fitouts. With design trends moving towards a more natural look in the home, timber furniture products such as benchtops, cabinets, cupboards, wardrobes, tables, closets and chairs among others have made a stylish re-entry into home interiors.

Timber is also a great option for outdoor furniture to create a space that connects with nature. The availability of timber in various tones and finishes will help you match your outdoor furniture to the style of your outdoor space.

Light Timber Flooring

Light coloured timber flooring is preferred by designers to achieve an Australian contemporary style in home interiors. Species such as American Oak or European Oak are popular for achieving this look on floors.

Light timber floors can be paired with bold forms, modern furniture and minimalist styling. A recent project by Matyas Architects with Market Timbers followed this style and received considerable recognition including on the cover of Domain magazine.

Flowing Timber from Floor to Benchtop

Many designers are also matching their timber floors to aspects of the benchtop, helping achieve a more rustic design outcome. For instance, one can create a seamless transition from a timber floor to a white benchtop by matching the joinery to the floor.
