For water filtration experts, Best Water Technology (BWT), precision, durability and functionality are core to their business operations and manufacturing philosophy. As a global leader in water filtration, it makes sense that these attributes are exactly what was needed for their new factory and warehouse facility in Port Melbourne.

The brief

In early 2022, BWT relocated to their new factory located in Port Melbourne, which for them represented a blank slate to set up a new and exciting facility.

One of their first projects, before setting up the factory and lab, was to create a functional space that would be long-lasting and easy to maintain.

To ensure that their processing plant and laboratory were protected from the high level of foot and mechanical traffic from day-to-day operations, BWT needed a coating for their floors that was ultra-hardwearing while being aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for their team of highly trained technicians.

BWT creates a durable, low VOC production space

Ultimate Two-Pack Epoxy, a water-based, highly durable, industrial coating from Haymes Paint was the perfect solution that allowed BWT to quickly turn their bare, concrete factory floor into a highly functional and efficient space.

Easy application

Ultimate Two-Pack Epoxy

With assistance from their local Haymes Paint Shop Port Melbourne and in consultation with Haymes Paint representative Ralph Cardamone, BWT Australia’s director Lee Yelland and his team decided to be part of the application process.

So, over the course of a weekend, the existing concrete floor was prepared using concrete grinding and cleaning, and the first coat was applied using a combination of rollers and brushes. Once the coating had dried (4 hours), the final coat was applied, and the result?

“It was quite easy once we got the hang of it, it was quite thick and covered surprisingly well. We were so impressed by how much of an impact it had almost instantly. Our staff are really pleased with how it looks,” Yelland said.

Because Ultimate Two Pack Epoxy is self-priming, this meant that the coating has fantastic adhesion and superior surface hardness. This was an important consideration for BWT due to the nature of their work.

“During operation hours, we have equipment moving in and out of the lab and assembly plant. It was important for us to make sure we had a solution that could withstand that kind of heavy traffic,” Yelland said.

In addition to its durability, Ultimate Two-Pack Epoxy also boasts excellent chemical resistance, which was perfect for BWT’s laboratory and wash-up areas.

Water-based durability

No one knows the power of water more than BWT. So, the fact that Ultimate Two-Pack Epoxy was water-based was a perfect match. Being 99% Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) free, meant that there was very little odour, which also meant that safety and comfort were maintained with very minimal disruption to operations.

“Our staff are the core of our business, so it was important that we made sure they were not affected at all by any strong smells or fumes,” Yelland added.

Being a food-grade coating, Ultimate could be used by BWT in areas of the production facility that produces products for the food industry, such as water filters for ice and coffee machines.

Being water-based also means that the Ultimate range is less harmful to the environment, assisting in the reduction of the use of unsustainable equivalents. For a business priding itself in the development and advancement of water filtration systems in Australia and around the world, BWT is a big promoter of technology that aligns with its sustainability objectives.
