Godfrey Hirst Australia partnered with RMIT University to offer an opportunity to students to design carpets and win an internship at their design studio.

The RMIT Textile Design students were tasked with the development of a collection of carpet designs to suit various areas of a hotel such as the ballroom, pre-function space, corridor and guestroom. The students were given a choice of six architects, whose work they could use for inspiration for their overall collection.

Students could choose what type of carpet they were designing for – either the 3.66-metre wide Axminster carpet or the 2-metre wide Designer Jet carpet, and also select from a broader colour palette of 20 colours.

The RMIT students were given 6-8 weeks to complete the task; during this time they had a briefing, a site visit to Godfrey Hirst, a concept board presentation, design progress and resolution meetings, and final submission of the design collections.

The Giants of Architecture program offered a multitude of prizes:

  • 1st prize for Best Woven Collection: Internship with Godfrey Hirst’s Woven Design Team
  • 1st prize for Best Print Collection: Internship with Godfrey Hirst’s Print Design Team
  • Sales Team Choice Award: $500 cheque and a dedicated page on the Catalogue

The design submissions made by the students were creative and inspired, and the winners received their awards at a presentation held in August 2019 at the RMIT Brunswick campus.
