What is a commercial keying system and how does it work?

A commercial keying system is a security measure that is used in businesses, organisations and offices to effectively and efficiently control access to their building or office space.

A commercial keying system helps secure a business by allowing access only to authorised staff (or other authorised people such as a tradesperson). It works by locking the door and issuing staff members a key or card, which they must carry at all times or a code that they enter into a keypad.

Choosing the right commercial keying system for your business

For over 25 years ASSA ABLOY has been a leader in access solutions and over that time has grown to become the largest global supplier of intelligent access solutions. In our keying systems range, we have three different options to choose from: a purely mechanical keying system (ABLOY Protec2), a hybrid electro-mechanical system (ABLOY Protec2 CLIQ) and a purely electronic keying system (ASSA ABLOY eCLIQ).

ABLOY Protec2

Key features of this mechanical keying system include a virtually pick-proof design, full resistance against bumping, durable design and smooth, reliable operation without pins and springs. It also features extensive master key capabilities (1.9 billion theoretical combinations), AWS Anti Wear System (a patented mechanism in the key and cylinder that prolongs the lifecycle), and rear loaded cylinder that increases the security of the cylinder against attack. The Protec2 keying system also features DBS Disc Blocking System, which stops attempts to manipulate discs individually in the cylinder by locking the discs together as one solid package. The Protec2 can also be upgraded to the ABLOY PROTEC2 CLIQ.

ABLOY Protec2 CLIQ

Key features of this keying system include electronic access control without wiring, easy installation since only the cylinder in the lock needs to be replaced (not the lock itself), flexible access permissions, IP57 rated keys and IP68 rated padlocks. Access permissions can be updated remotely and batteries can be replaced easily using a standard battery. You can also combine mechanical and electromechanical keys and cylinders with this keying system.

ASSA ABLOY eCLIQ

Key features of this keying system include electronic access control without wiring and easy installation since only the cylinder in the lock needs to be replaced, not the lock itself. It has IP67-rated CLIQ keys and padlocks, access permissions can be updated remotely and it has a standard battery that can be replaced easily.

Using a commercial keying system

There are a few things you'll need to use a commercial keying system. The first is the proper equipment – this includes both the key itself and the controller. Second, you'll need to create or obtain an access code. The access code is unique to each building and must be obtained in advance from your security provider.

Next, you'll need to mount the appropriate hardware on your door – this includes both the key cylinder and the controller. You will also need an outside key (if using a cylinder system) and an inside key (if using a padlock). Finally, you'll need to learn how to operate your system.

Depending on your lockdown or other procedure for locking doors, it may make sense to have the outside cylinder keyed differently from the inside cylinder. For example, if you have a procedure called ‘double-lock’, it may make sense to have both cylinders double-keyed so that doors can only be opened with both keys simultaneously.
